The School of Public Health (SPH) which origins from the Department of Preventive Medicine (formerly known as the Department of Health), Fujian Medical College, was created in the year of 1959 and recognized as one of the few institutes that had Bachelor program of Preventive Medicine early in China. In 2001, SPH was formally established on the basis of original Department of Preventive Medicine. Nowadays, SPH has developed as a multi-disciplinary, specialized, multi-level teaching base and scientific research center for public health, including preventive medicine, health management, food quality and safety, and health inspection and quarantine in Fujian Province. SPH provides undergraduate as well as postgraduate training, and also devotes to continuing education for health professionals. 

SPH has a staff of more than 110, 73 of whom are full-time faculty members, among whom 93% have doctoral or master degrees. Among the 73 faculty members, there are 46 Professors/ Associate Professors, 51 are supervisors for master/doctoral students, 2 are distinguished experts at national level, 1 national distinguished professor, 1 provincial distinguished professor, and 2 are distinguished teacher at provincial level. SPH consists of six departments, including Department of Preventive Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Health Statistics, Department of Nutrition and Food Safety, Department of Health Inspection and Quarantine Department of Health Management, and Department of Health Law and Policy, as well as 1 Experimental Center.

SPH can offer doctoral and master degrees in Public Health and Preventive Medicine, master degree in Social Sciences and Health Management, and master degree in Public Health (MPH). There are 4 provincial key disciplines including Epidemiology and Health Statistics, Environment and Health, Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and Public Health Management. There are also 7 provincial key laboratories, for example, the joint laboratory in cooperation with academician Lin Dongxin, Fujian Institute of Big Data of Oncology, and Fujian Provincial Research Center of Medical Reform and Development. It has 4 full-time undergraduate programs including Preventive Medicine, Public Health Management, Food Quality and Safety, and Health Inspection and Quarantine, and has more than 1,700 students, including more than 220 doctoral/master students.

The long history of SPH helps to provide the high teaching quality. The school has a national-level specialty construction point and a national experimental teaching demonstration center. It has been granted 12 provincial-level education reform projects, such as a pilot provincial program for comprehensive reform in teaching, a provincial experimental teaching demonstration center, and the Talent Training Model Innovation Experimental Zone. We also have 3 provincial-level distinguished teaching teams, such as Epidemiology and Health Statistics, and 7 provincial-level qualified courses including Health Toxicology. There are more than 30 off-campus professional and clinical teaching bases such as the Fujian Provincial Health Commission, the Provincial Entry-Exit  Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, the provincial and municipal CDC, the Health Supervision Institute, and the University affiliated hospitals and teaching hospitals.

SPH adheres to the frontiers of science and technologyand always strive to be exploratory and creative. In the past five years, it has undertaken more than 70 national and provincial scientific research projects, published more than 400 research papers, edited more than 70 textbooks and monographs, and obtained more than 30 scientific and technological achievement award. The school has extensively participated in international or inter-school academic exchanges, and has conducted academic exchanges and mutual visits with nearly 20 universities in Japan, Australia, the United States, Europe, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and established friendly and cooperative relations. So far, SPH has trained more than 7,000 professional personnel in public health, which has made an important contribution to the development of public health in China.
